General Summary and Purpose:
The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer II is tasked with reviewing the Physician Order and pertinent examination rationale, while preparing patients for their ultrasound exams and procedures. This role involves performing a diverse array of specialized medical ultrasound examinations and procedures aimed at producing high-quality images for diagnostic interpretation, in line with established departmental protocols. The Sonographer may also provide assistance to physicians during ultrasound-guided procedures. Collaboration with Ultrasound leadership and Radiologists is essential in this position. The Sonographer is expected to perform a variety of technical tasks that necessitate independent judgment, coupled with integrity and initiative.

Essential Functions:

  • Review patients’ medical charts and historical ultrasound examinations or diagnostic studies, and accurately record personal and medical information.
  • Explain ultrasound procedures to patients thoughtfully and empathetically, thereby alleviating fears and ensuring cooperation.
  • Conduct diagnostic procedures through the operation and manipulation of complex ultrasound equipment and accessories.
  • Collaborate with radiologists and experienced colleagues to assess the need for additional imaging to achieve comprehensive interpretations.
  • Proactively enhance staff education through in-service training, literature distribution, peer mentorship, and facilitation of new employee orientation and training as required.
  • Adapt to schedule and location changes, fostering positive working relationships with staff across various locations. Responsible for rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays as determined by management, which may include assignments at different campuses.
  • Exhibit the ability to effectively schedule examinations, along with performing relevant clerical duties, such as answering phones and retrieving prior imaging records and reports.
  • Maintain registry by completing necessary continuing education credits.
  • Demonstrate competency in Basic Life Support (BLS) as evidenced by attending an annual BLS review.
  • Employ sterile, isolation, and aseptic techniques to prevent contamination and uphold stringent infection control measures.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of infection control procedures and comply with policies regarding intracavitary probe disinfection at all locations worked.
  • Assist in the execution of aspiration, biopsy, or operating room procedures, ensuring adherence to sterilization, isolation, and infection control protocols.
  • Foster good rapport and cooperative relationships, addressing conflicts constructively.
  • Uphold the confidentiality of all patient, physician, employee, and visitor information related to St. Joseph Mercy Health System.
  • Assume responsibility for executing job duties safely to ensure the well-being of oneself and colleagues.

  • Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned by the hiring manager or supervisor.

Skills, Knowledge, Education, and Experience:

  • Completion of an accredited Medical Sonography program.
  • Registered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) with at least one certification OR registry-eligible with certification within one year of hire.
  • Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • A minimum of one year of experience as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy.
  • Proficient in producing and evaluating quality images.
  • An exceptionally conscientious and detail-oriented individual, with strong communication skills and a commitment to excellent customer service when interacting with patients and a range of hospital personnel, customers, and community groups.
