GENERAL SUMMARY AND PURPOSE:
The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer II is responsible for interpreting physician orders and the rationale for examinations, as well as preparing patients for procedures. This role involves performing a variety of specialized medical ultrasound examinations to produce high-quality images for diagnostic interpretation, adhering to departmental protocols. The Sonographer II also conducts vascular examinations under the direct supervision of a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) or Radiologist and may assist physicians with ultrasound-guided procedures. Collaboration with Ultrasound leadership and Radiologists is essential. The Sonographer will carry out technical procedures requiring independent judgment, demonstrating integrity and initiative.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
– Completion of an accredited Medical Sonography program
– Certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in Abdomen (ABD) or Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) within one year of hire date
– RVT Registry eligible with certification obtained within one year of hire date
– Maintenance of Continuing Education credits (10 per year or 30 every three years) for certification
– Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
– A minimum of one year of experience as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is preferred
– Comprehensive knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy
– Proficiency in producing and evaluating quality images
– Strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to providing superior customer service to patients and various stakeholders

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer II is responsible for accurately interpreting physician orders and scanning designated areas of the body using appropriate positioning techniques. This role requires a thorough understanding of cross-sectional anatomy, including aspects of the abdomen, gynecology, superficial structures, and vascular systems. The Sonographer prepares sterile fields and assists physicians with procedures such as biopsies, cyst punctures, and abscess drainage, as needed. Preliminary reports from radiologists are relayed to physicians or nursing units in accordance with site requirements.

The Sonographer is accountable for initiating patient records, including personal data and tests ordered, and performs diagnostic procedures with various complex ultrasound equipment. Providing physical comfort and emotional support to patients is paramount. Responsibilities also include transporting patients to the Radiology Department and providing necessary assistance from wheelchairs and stretchers to examination tables.

The role involves communicating with nursing units regarding patient preparation and coordinating scanning schedules with other ordered tests. The Sonographer may contact physicians’ offices for clarification of orders and to gather additional information as needed. Collaboration with outreach hospital personnel is crucial for optimizing service delivery.

The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer II will perform duties consistent with established ultrasound practices under the guidance of the Radiologist, and must keep abreast of emerging ultrasound technologies and trends. Attendance at mandatory meetings and in-services is required, along with the upkeep of equipment and hygiene standards.

In addition, the Sonographer, supervised by the Radiologist and RVT, will conduct vascular exams, such as venous studies and carotid mappings. It is essential to maintain proficiency in all relevant registry modalities (RDMS, RVT) and to remain informed of applicable regulations and organizational integrity standards.

The Sonographer must ensure proper entry of charges for patient encounters and is responsible for documenting care in the electronic health records system concurrently with patient interactions. Building and maintaining cooperative relationships, the Sonographer should approach conflicts constructively, contribute to problem-solving, and maintain confidentiality regarding patient and hospital information.

The individual will perform job duties in a manner that emphasizes safety for themselves and colleagues, immediately reporting any preventable hazards to management.
