Job description:

The Michigan State Bar Foundation (MSBF) is currently searching for a highly skilled Director of Development to spearhead statewide fundraising strategies, oversee the Access to Justice Campaign, and manage the MSBF Fellows Program. This pivotal leadership position will enhance and elevate MSBF’s development practices, with a concentrated effort on cultivating robust donor relationships within Michigan’s legal community.

Founded in 1947, MSBF is dedicated to promoting access to justice by funding civil legal aid and providing public education on the legal system. With over $210 million in grants awarded, MSBF supports critical services for low-income individuals, assisting approximately 50,000 cases annually across Michigan. The Foundation’s initiatives also prioritize educating the public about legal rights, the justice system, and alternative dispute resolution.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Planning and Implementation

  • Lead the development and execution of MSBF’s statewide fundraising strategy, emphasizing annual results and best practices.
  • Create a comprehensive annual development plan that includes strategies for major gifts, planned giving, and collaborative opportunities with other philanthropic organizations and state agencies.
  • Regularly analyze and report on the progress of the Access to Justice Campaign (ATJ), providing recommendations to the Steering Committee to enhance fundraising efforts.

Team Leadership

  • Supervise, mentor, and facilitate professional development for four direct reports, fostering a culture of collaboration and high performance.
  • Establish clear objectives, conduct performance evaluations, and promote a growth-oriented work environment.

Donor and Fundraising Management

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with major donors, legal aid programs, and volunteer board and committee members.
  • Oversee donor identification, solicitation, and stewardship to build strong, sustainable connections with philanthropic supporters, including law firms and individual attorneys, adhering to fundraising best practices.
  • Implement innovative strategies to engage and retain donors, ensuring the effective use of donor management software for accurate tracking and acknowledgment.

Event Planning and Management

  • Efficiently manage staff and volunteer resources in organizing awareness-building events for Michigan State Bar members.
  • Strategically oversee event preparations to maximize impact within approved budgets, ensuring a strong return on investment (ROI).

Communications and Marketing

  • Direct the Manager of Communications in the development of MSBF’s fundraising materials, including brochures, newsletters, and digital content.
  • Promote MSBF’s mission and impact through cost-effective outreach channels, including social media, press releases, and community engagement initiatives.

Administration and Budget Management

  • Develop and oversee the budget for the development and fundraising department, ensuring alignment with financial targets.
  • Establish and uphold best practices for gift processing, confidentiality, and fundraising policies.
  • Monitor and analyze fundraising metrics to inform strategy adjustments.

Collaboration and Coordination

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director, ATJ Steering Committee, Board of Directors, and fundraising committees to emphasize the significance of civil legal aid.
  • Work across the MSBF team to uphold shared values and demonstrate respect for recipients of funds raised.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nonprofit Management, Business, or a related field; CFRE or advanced studies preferred.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in nonprofit development or fundraising, with at least 3 years in a management role.
  • Proven track record of meeting and exceeding fundraising goals.
  • Strong understanding of planned giving and experience in donor management.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and networking skills.
  • Proficient in donor management software and the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to multitask, work independently, and apply best practices in nonprofit development.
