Job description:

The Divisional Music Director will collaborate with the Divisional Program Department to enhance and fortify the music programs within the Division and, more importantly, across individual Corps units. This role entails frequent engagement in the field throughout the week, scheduled visits on Sundays, and a deep understanding of each Corps within the Command regarding their music programs and the leaders involved. Priority will be placed on spiritual leadership, discipleship, and mentoring, which will be seamlessly integrated into all facets of music rehearsals, instruction, and performance within the NEOSA division. This position is essential to the realization of The Salvation Army’s mission.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prioritize the establishment and maintenance of vibrant music programs for youth and adults in every Corps within the NEOSA Division.

  • Integrate and promote Christian values throughout the music programs, fostering a sense of community and encouraging active participation in the Christian faith.

  • Attend divisional events and provide music support as required.

  • Participate in monthly Divisional Program Council committee meetings for reporting and planning.

  • Deliver music lessons at the Corps as assigned by the Program Secretary, with an expectation of a minimum presence at the Corps three nights a week.

  • Identify and train leaders in music leadership skills, including Brass, Voice, Piano, Guitar, and Timbrels, for local Corps use and Divisional events.

  • Mentor the Assistant Divisional Music Director in all aspects of music leadership and administration.

  • Annually identify and mentor three musicians/leaders.

  • Assist Corps Officers in securing resources for music programs, including funding, instruments, and participant engagement.

  • Ensure timely and effective communication of events to the division, Corps, band members, and a general mailing list, including updates for the DHQ website, social media, and newsletters.

  • Organize and execute the Divisional Music activities.

  • Collaborate with the Assistant Divisional Music Director, Creative Arts Director, and other Program Department staff to plan and execute the Divisional Music and Arts Camp.

  • Organize and coordinate the Divisional Star Search event and represent the Division at the Territorial Star Search event.

  • Oversee and facilitate the participation of NEOSA youth musicians in territorial initiatives such as Star Lake Music Camp, ETS Singing Stars, Future All Stars, and Star Search, with attendance requirements as necessary.

  • Supervise and coordinate the divisional music ensembles, ensuring the highest standards of performance and teamwork with the Creative Arts Director and Assistant Divisional Music Director.

  • Under the guidance of the Program Secretary, manage the business affairs of the Music Department with consideration for budgetary constraints, while maintaining the Divisional Music library and instrument inventory.

  • Cultivate a strong relationship with the Kroc Music Ministry through coordination with Kroc leaders and corps officers.

  • Attend conferences and events as requested and approved by the Divisional Program Secretary and Leadership.

  • Support the Development department in proposals for grants aimed at sustaining the acquisition or maintenance of musical instruments, implementing a piano subsidy program, and fostering leadership initiatives.

  • Stay current with and adhere to Keep Safe training and policies across all job responsibilities.

  • Participate in and lead prayer, instruct in religious principles, and exemplify Christian behavior.

Success in this role will be measured by the growth and vitality of music programs within the Corps, the advancement of divisional music groups, and overall effectiveness in developing music initiatives throughout the NEOSA Division. The position falls under the Ministerial Exception, exempting it from federal and state employment laws.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and/or Experience

  • Must be an active, uniformed Salvationist and remain engaged in a corps setting throughout employment, with a strong commitment to The Salvation Army’s mission.

  • A bachelor’s degree in music is required; a master’s degree is preferred.

  • A minimum of four years of relevant work experience.

  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and communication skills with a capacity to manage multiple tasks effectively.

  • Ability to facilitate teamwork among the Assistant Divisional Music Director and volunteers.

  • Collaborative skills to work with the Divisional Creative Arts Director.

  • Possess a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel.

  • Proficient computer skills, including familiarity with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.

  • Capacity to instruct all levels of music students and conduct vocal or brass groups at an advanced level.
