Job Title: Entrepreneurship Support Specialist

Company: Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation

Location: Detroit, MI

Pay: $20 – 22 per hour

AI Pay Analysis: The hourly rate of $20 to $22 for the role of “Entrepreneurship Support Specialist” in Detroit, MI, is generally considered below competitive market rates. Based on industry standards, similar roles, particularly in economic development, startup incubators, or nonprofit organizations, typically offer hourly wages ranging from $25 to $35 or more depending on experience, qualifications, and specific job responsibilities. Moreover, the cost of living in Detroit, while lower than in many metropolitan areas, still expects compensation that reflects the skills and expertise required for effective entrepreneurship support. Therefore, the proposed rate may attract less experienced candidates or those seeking entry-level positions but may struggle to retain more qualified applicants.

Job description:
Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation (DHDC) is a community-focused organization located in Southwest Detroit, offering a diverse range of integrated services designed to empower youth, adults, and families on their journey towards self-determination. Our Small Business Hub provides personalized counseling and group workshops tailored for business owners, covering essential topics such as Business Development 101, business planning, financial literacy, financial forecasting, marketing and branding, social media strategy, strategic planning, cost-benefit analysis, break-even analysis, and the process of establishing an LLC.

The Fantazma program, derived from the Spanish word for “Ghost,” features a Market & Café that innovatively blends the ghost kitchen concept—offering meals exclusively for delivery—with a dynamic food hall experience where various chefs rotate in the restaurant’s kitchen. DHDC has further enhanced this concept by integrating retail spaces alongside the food businesses and incorporating live entertainment. Since piloting this initiative in August 2021, we have successfully hosted 12 events from April through December, each with a unique theme aimed at attracting diverse customer bases. Each event typically features 20-25 retail vendors, 1-3 pop-up kitchens, and various forms of entertainment, creating an inclusive environment for creative community members to showcase, sell, and monetize their art. Attendance at these events has ranged from 100 to 2,000 participants, with an average of 300 and an upward trend.

The Entrepreneurship Support Specialist will play a pivotal role in coordinating all activities related to the Fantazma Market & Café. Key responsibilities include:

– Collaborating with the team to design and implement engaging events for the Fantazma Market & Café.
– Recruiting, evaluating, and scheduling vendors, entertainers, artists, and pop-up kitchens.
– Coordinating payments for artists, entertainers, and contracted labor involved in Fantazma events.
– Cultivating and maintaining relationships while ensuring clear communication with vendors, entertainers, artists, and pop-up kitchens.
– Invoicing and processing payments for vendors and pop-up kitchens using QuickBooks.
– Managing inventory, purchasing supplies, and ensuring the proper storage and usage of event equipment.
– Overseeing vendor set-up, event execution, and hosting responsibilities.
– Assisting with the setup and breakdown of events.
– Ensuring all market participants sign in.
– Distributing marketing materials for the Entrepreneurship Department’s activities and events.
– Creating and maintaining relevant content for Fantazma and the department’s social media channels.
– Monitoring budgetary allocations, expenses, and financial reporting for the Fantazma Market & Café.
– Providing coaching to small businesses on effective social media techniques, methods, and best practices.
– Contributing to the development and administration of the program’s policies, goals, and objectives.
– Identifying and implementing methods to enhance workflow and processes.
– Executing additional related duties as assigned.

Qualifications for the role include:

– A minimum of two (2) years of experience in event planning, outreach, and project management.
– Possession of a valid Driver’s License.
– Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to succinctly summarize and present large volumes of data.
– Demonstrated interpersonal skills and the capacity to collaborate effectively with diverse individuals and groups.
– Strong analytical abilities.
– Proficient computer skills, including a strong command of MS Office Suite, Google Drive, Asana, and expertise in social media content creation.
– Effective project management skills, including the capacity to work independently on complex projects with minimal supervision.
– Sound judgment and creative problem-solving skills, including negotiation and conflict resolution capabilities.
– Proven ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects concurrently.
– Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is an asset.
