The Food Services Shift Supervisor position at a correctional facility is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of food service, including the preparation and serving of three meals per day. This role involves the direct supervision of staff and prisoner workers, ensuring the delivery of general population meals, religious meals, and therapeutic diets. The Supervisor is tasked with training subordinate staff and prisoners in large quantity food service preparation while upholding the adherence to policy directives, the State-Wide menu, operational procedures, nutritional standards, as well as safe food handling, sanitation, and safety protocols. Additionally, this position collaborates with custody staff to maintain the safety and security of the facility.

Required Education and Experience

Education
Candidates are typically expected to possess a high school diploma or its equivalent.

Experience
A minimum of four years of experience in overseeing quantity cooking and food preparation tasks equivalent to those performed by a Cook, which includes three years at a level equivalent to Cook E6 or two years equivalent to Cook 7.

Alternate Education and Experience
An associate’s degree in dietetics, food services management, hotel, restaurant, and institution management, or human nutrition, accompanied by two years of experience in overseeing large-scale cooking and food preparation, including one year at a Cook E6 level, may be accepted as a substitute for the required experience. Alternatively, a bachelor’s degree in the same fields may be considered with no prior experience.

Additional Requirements and Information
In accordance with Public Act 140 of 1996, the Department of Corrections will not consider applicants who have been convicted of a felony or who have pending felony charges. Further, applicants with misdemeanor or felony convictions are ineligible for employment with the Department until they have satisfactorily completed all imposed sentences, including parole or probation.
