Job description:
The Institution Chaplain is tasked with ensuring that religious services, as well as the religious needs and rights of prisoners, are made available at Parnall Correctional Facility. This role includes the planning, coordination, and management of all religious programming within the facility. Responsibilities encompass scheduling services, recruiting and training volunteers, organizing religious special events, providing pastoral counseling, supervising religious purchases and orders, identifying appropriate religious vendors, and serving as a religious resource for staff.

Required Education and Experience
Education
Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in religion, theology, divinity, or a related field within human services, such as guidance and counseling, social work, or criminal justice.
Experience
- For the Institution Chaplain 9 level, no specific experience is required.
- For the Institution Chaplain 10 level, a minimum of one year of professional experience as a religious leader in either a community or institutional setting equivalent to an Institution Chaplain 9 is required.
- For the Institution Chaplain P11 level, a minimum of two years of professional experience as a religious leader in either a community or institutional setting, including one year equivalent to an Institution Chaplain 10, is required.
Alternate Education and Experience
Candidates for levels 9-12 may substitute an associate’s degree in religious studies or a related human services field, along with two years (4,160 hours) of experience performing religious services (e.g., marriages, burials, baptisms) for the educational requirement.
Additional Requirements and Information
Candidates must have certification or endorsement from a recognized endorsing body relevant to their religious faith. Some positions may necessitate that only individuals with particular religious credentials be considered. The Department of Corrections will not employ individuals who have been convicted of a felony or have pending felony charges, in accordance with Public Act 140 of 1996.
