GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under limited supervision and in accordance with established procedures, this role involves performing a variety of laboratory support activities, including specimen collection or phlebotomy, order entry, processing, point-of-care testing, and the transportation of laboratory specimens and materials. The position requires that blood sample collection constitutes at least 25% of scheduled hours. The incumbent will interact with patients, laboratory staff, and caregivers in a courteous and professional manner.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
– Prepare patient specimens for laboratory testing, prioritizing the pre-analytic and post-analytic processes.
– Accurately enter patient demographic and test order information into laboratory information systems in a timely manner, adhering to training protocols and maintaining patient confidentiality. Address routine inquiries from patients and staff as needed.
– Perform blood sample collection or phlebotomy as a primary duty, ensuring that this task constitutes at least 25% of scheduled hours. Demonstrate ongoing competency, productivity, and compassion when serving all patients.
– Understand and uphold HFHS Standards of Excellence to foster a culture of exceptional customer service in all interactions with patients, colleagues, and caregivers.
– Review laboratory request forms for comprehensive demographic and order information, resolving discrepancies as necessary. Exercise meticulous care in specimen handling and order entry to safeguard the identity and integrity of samples.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
– High school diploma or equivalent is required.
– The ability to follow written and verbal instructions and demonstrate exceptional customer service skills is essential.
– A minimum of six months of experience in phlebotomy is required. New hires must successfully complete a competency evaluation and demonstrate safety and proficiency with patients of all ages likely to seek services.
– For positions that require off-site travel, candidates must possess and maintain a valid Michigan motor vehicle license, as well as reliable transportation with insurance.
– Experience in a hospital or clinic laboratory setting is preferred.
– Familiarity with medical terminology is a plus.
