The Major Gifts Officer role is a crucial component of Kalamazoo College’s Advancement team, dedicated to securing annual, major, and planned gifts from alumni, parents, and friends who have significant giving potential. This position involves managing a geographically diverse portfolio, crafting strategic donor engagement plans, and collaborating across the college to achieve fundraising objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

Portfolio Management & Donor Engagement:

  • Manage and cultivate a diverse portfolio of major and planned gift donors.
  • Personally engage with donors to solicit gifts and meet annual fundraising targets.

Strategic Planning & Execution:

  • Develop and implement customized cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies that align with institutional priorities to maximize donor contributions.

Collaboration & Coordination:

  • Collaborate closely with Advancement colleagues, faculty, coaches, and administrators to ensure effective donor relations.
  • Assist in drafting fund agreements and memorandums of understanding alongside donors and staff.

Documentation & Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive donor records, including contact reports, itineraries, and expense reports.
  • Work with Prospect Management and Research to ensure donor profiles remain current and detailed.

Event Support & Participation:

  • Actively participate in key events, such as Homecoming, Commencement, and other donor-related activities, providing essential planning and on-site support as needed.

Continuous Learning & Development:

  • Stay up-to-date with trends in development through professional development activities to enhance the overall effectiveness of the fundraising team.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • A demonstrated track record of fundraising success with a minimum of three years of experience, preferably in higher education.
  • Willingness and ability to travel 50% of the time and work evening and weekend hours as necessary.
  • Strong capacity for building and maintaining productive working relationships and earning the confidence and trust of colleagues and donors.
