Position Purpose
The General Manager plays a crucial role in overseeing and coordinating the daily operations of the Environmental Services (EVS) Department within the Regional Health Ministry (RHM) at a single hospital or across multiple sites. This position is responsible for monitoring patient satisfaction levels and ensuring compliance with RHM quality standards and regulatory requirements in patient, non-patient, and public areas.
The General Manager collaborates with Trinity Health System (THS) Regional Managers and RHM stakeholders to develop and manage program budgets and operational systems. They will work closely with all stakeholders and peers at RHMs and across the region to create and implement effective cost reduction plans and processes to support the goals, objectives, strategies, policies, and procedures of Trinity Health and the RHM EVS Department. The role emphasizes meeting cost reduction targets and productivity improvement objectives while enhancing service and product quality as well as customer satisfaction. It is essential to keep the Regional Manager and RHM stakeholders informed about any issues impacting program efficiency and effectiveness. Essential Functions
The General Manager demonstrates a comprehensive understanding and integration of Trinity Health’s Mission, Vision, and Values in all professional behaviors, practices, and decision-making processes. They oversee the daily management of the RHM’s EVS Department, ensuring that program service support objectives are consistently met. The General Manager promotes a positive work environment that encourages creativity, teamwork, and collaboration across all functional areas.
Operational and technical support is provided to RHM stakeholders, managers, and the System Office to facilitate the overall management of EVS programs. Responsibilities include developing, implementing, and coordinating the following within the RHM:
- Standardization of policies and procedures related to EVS expense management and operations.
- Implementation of Trinity Hospitality Services core program systems, including cleaning practices and protocols, auditing tools, and competencies.
The General Manager ensures that all aspects of departmental operations are compliant, optimal, and efficient, thereby securing patient and customer satisfaction. Serving as a liaison, they ensure timely responses to patient and customer concerns, conducting regular inspections of environmental cleanliness and customer satisfaction.
They also ensure that regional financial objectives remain aligned, driving initiatives with RHM teams that contribute to both short and long-term operational excellence for THS programs. The General Manager is responsible for the fiduciary oversight of RHM’s monthly EVS program financial statements, collaborating with local stakeholders and the Regional Manager to prepare and submit annual program budgets. They participate in monthly budget reviews to identify variances and prepare reports for senior management consideration.
Keeping the Regional Manager informed about factors affecting program costs, service capabilities, and overall effectiveness is vital. The General Manager presents insights and recommendations for improvements to the Regional Manager and meets with direct reports to review operational goals, address shortcomings, and foster open discussions regarding process enhancements. They are tasked with developing and administering Program Quality Evaluations and examining Customer Satisfaction Survey scores to identify discrepancies, addressing quality deficiencies through Performance Improvement Plans (PIP) where necessary.
The role includes interviewing, hiring, training, and supervising staff, as well as managing disciplinary actions and reviewing expense reports in accordance with Trinity Health and THS policies. The General Manager is responsible for ensuring the timely completion of annual performance appraisals and addressing any colleague-related challenges. They promote the development of diverse teams and outline annual skills development and career growth opportunities with direct reports.
The position requires effective management of multiple projects and tasks in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to adapt to changing circumstances. Excellent project planning skills are necessary to establish milestones and timelines for major initiatives. The General Manager participates in Trinity Health EVS advisory councils to develop industry-leading programs and identify best practices, driving operational, financial, and service performance improvements in coordination with the UEM.
Engagement in various RHM committees, such as Safety, Green, Disaster Preparedness, Infection Control, and HR advisory, is also expected, contributing to cohesive interdisciplinary teamwork within RHM operations. They ensure continuous quality improvement within the department, focusing on cleaning, safety, and infection control in collaboration with Infection Control Preventionists and clinical stakeholders, adhering to all cleaning protocols to foster a culture centered on patient safety and the prevention of healthcare-acquired infections.
The General Manager maintains safety standards and procedures, minimizing workman’s compensation claims, while ensuring a safe working environment for all Environmental Services colleagues. They are responsible for maintaining accurate departmental operation records as required and exhibit a cost-conscious approach to time management.
Additional duties and responsibilities may be assigned as needed. The role prioritizes the confidentiality of information related to patients, staff, and visitors, consistent with RHM and System Office policies. Furthermore, the General Manager is expected to possess a current knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, as well as Trinity Health’s Integrity and Compliance Program and Code of Conduct, to ensure adherence to organizational standards of honesty, ethics, and professionalism.
Minimum Qualifications
The position requires comprehensive knowledge and understanding of housekeeping and environmental services management principles, typically obtained through a minimum of five to seven years of progressive experience in a corporate or large multi-hospital environment. A BA or BS in Management is preferred.
Candidates should demonstrate knowledge of JCAHO standards, along with Federal, State, and local laws, regulations, and codes related to safety, sanitation, and environmental maintenance, including bio-hazardous and infectious waste management.
The ability to thrive in a diverse, collaborative, and team-oriented culture is essential, alongside skills in identifying and analyzing complex technical, operational, and administrative problems, evaluating solutions, and recommending or implementing effective changes.
Proficiency in developing methodologies for data collection and analysis is necessary, as is experience in auditing program processes, monitoring quality, and identifying underlying issues for improvement.
