The Manufacturing Plant Superintendent will play a pivotal role in leading operations at our Defiance, Ohio facility, with a salary range of $111,000 to $153,000, and opportunities for relocation assistance. This position has become available due to a promotion and is essential for the success of the Insulation Systems Division.
In this capacity, you will manage a team of over 150 hourly employees and six salaried staff, overseeing performance evaluations, compensation reviews, hiring, and terminations. A comprehensive understanding of union operations, specifically with the UAW and USW, is essential as the plant operates within a union environment and requires knowledge of the union grievance process.
As the Plant Superintendent, you will be responsible for the operational budget, strategic planning, and driving cost reduction initiatives, including implementing Six Sigma and continuous improvement methodologies. An engineering background is preferred, as successful candidates will possess a strong grasp of mechanical systems, including crank-drive motors, and will have experience in preventative maintenance and problem-solving at a mechanical level.
Key responsibilities include:
– Leading the Pipe Production Department, the facility’s largest segment, which consists of 10 production lines and 156 personnel, supported by four production supervisors, two full-time engineers, and a Project Engineer reporting indirectly to this role.
– Ensuring departmental compliance with safety regulations and promoting initiatives to safeguard personnel and maintain facility standards.
– Managing workflow to ensure adherence to production schedules, quality standards, and inventory management.
– Effectively utilizing resources and expertise to optimize operational costs through team management principles.
– Collaborating closely with Quality Assurance (QA), Quality Control (QC), and engineering teams to maintain efficient production schedules and quality systems.
– Developing annual budgets, quality programs, and plans for productivity improvement.
– Conducting performance reviews and maintaining training programs to facilitate growth and alignment with business objectives.
– Coordinating technical activities with Engineering and other departments, and managing special projects as needed.
– Acting as Plant Manager in their absence and undertaking additional related tasks as required.
Requirements for this role include:
– A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Industrial, or Ceramics) or Business Management, accompanied by a minimum of seven years of progressive experience in a manufacturing setting, encompassing supervisory and managerial responsibilities.
– Proven leadership abilities, with experience in driving change within a heavy industrial framework.
– Technical proficiency and the capability to develop high-performing teams on the shop floor.
– Strong problem-solving skills and expertise in productivity methodologies such as Lean or Six Sigma.
– Solid experience with ERP systems, preferably SAP, and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
– Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written, along with analytical capabilities focused on quality improvement.
