Job description:
- Design and construct museum exhibits, frames, housing, mounts, display cases, lighting, theatrical sets, and costumes utilizing advanced woodworking, metalworking, welding, carpentry, electrical, glazing, draping, patterning, and sewing techniques.
- Fabricate and reproduce specimens, backgrounds, and structures, ensuring a balance between artistic integrity and scientific accuracy. Prepare works of art for display by matting, framing, and unframing.
- Carry out minor conservation treatments, such as mending small tears and surface cleaning, while advising on the necessity for professional conservator involvement. Maintain facility infrastructure, climate control systems, exhibits, costumes, collections, and workshop tools and machinery.
- Supervise and mentor support staff in the installation and disassembly of exhibits and sets. Organize and prepare collections for exhibitions, safely handling, moving, packing, and unpacking artworks for display, storage, and loans using specialized methods and materials.
- Serve as a courier for artworks, manage orders for materials and supplies, develop time and cost estimates, and monitor budgets and other financial documents. Engage with designers, exhibit creators, conservators, and curators to exchange essential information.
- Conduct research pertinent to construction activities when necessary, and efficiently input and retrieve data from the museum’s collection management database and other digital systems.
- Perform clerical tasks related to construction activities as required.
Required Education and Experience: Six years of related work experience, including four years in the same job family at the next lower level with a high school diploma; or four years of related work experience paired with an Associate’s degree; or minimal work experience combined with a Bachelor’s degree in a related field; or a comparable combination of education and experience.
Additional Information:
- Occasional weekend and evening hours may be required.
- This is a fixed-duration position for six months from the date of hire, with the possibility of extension.
- The standard work week is 37.5 hours, with a schedule from Monday to Friday.

Required Licenses or Certifications: Valid Connecticut driver’s license.
Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications: Two years of experience monitoring building systems and familiarity with the operation of valve/damper actuators, pressure transducers, and air quality monitors to detect abnormalities. Experience working in a museum environment managing building systems and preservation issues is highly desirable. Proficiency in computer usage is expected.
