Medication Technician Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Executive Director and Wellness Director, the Medication Technician is primarily responsible for administering medications to residents in a safe, precise, and timely manner.

Qualifications and Required Experience for Medication Technician:
– Exceptional communication skills and a strong compassion for older adults
– Valid driver’s license

Primary Responsibilities for Medication Technician:
– Administer medications according to physician orders as documented in the medication administration record (MAR).
– Accurately document medications administered on the MAR in compliance with company policies.
– Conduct thorough checks of the MAR immediately after administration and prior to the end of each shift to ensure that all documentation is complete and accurate.
– Perform change of shift reports with oncoming and outgoing personnel.
– Ensure the security of the medication cart and narcotic keys throughout the shift; conduct narcotic counts at the beginning and end of each shift following company policies and procedures.
– Provide comprehensive care and services to assigned residents, assisting other caregivers as necessary.
– Foster collaboration with peers and other team members to enhance resident care.
– Assist residents with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) including bathing, dressing, personal hygiene, toileting, eating, and mobility.
– Maintain a professional demeanor in all interactions with residents and their families.
– Report any suspected or observed instances of verbal, mental, or physical abuse to licensed staff immediately.
– Utilize safe transfer techniques when assisting residents with mobility.
– Participate in and support the resident-centered activities program.
– Care for sensory enhancement devices, including eyeglasses and hearing aids.
– Perform housekeeping duties such as bed-making, changing linens, vacuuming, and cleaning bathrooms.
– Manage residents’ laundry as needed.
– Escort residents and coordinate their internal transportation needs.
– Assist residents with personal correspondence and telephone usage when requested.
– Observe and report any changes in residents’ physical or cognitive/emotional conditions to the Wellness Director or charge nurse as required.
– Conduct room checks and resident rounds to ensure safety and well-being.
– Monitor for environmental safety hazards.
– Assist with dining-related tasks such as escorting residents to the dining room, setting and cleaning tables, serving meals, and bussing tables.
– Support residents without swallowing difficulties during meal time.
– Respond promptly and calmly to emergencies, immediately reporting such incidents to the charge nurse.
– Attend and engage in staff meetings and mandatory in-services.
– Document the provision of services on company forms.
– Employ tactful and diplomatic communication techniques in sensitive or emotionally charged situations.
– Follow up with relevant staff, residents, or others regarding reported complaints, problems, and concerns.
– Act as an ambassador and public relations representative to guests and visitors from outside the community.
– Communicate effectively with physicians and third-party specialists, including home care providers, laboratories, and hospice professionals.
– Copy special paperwork or forms as necessary.
– Demonstrate an appreciation for the heritage, values, and wisdom of residents while understanding the aging process.
– Collaborate with colleagues in other departments to ensure necessary care and services are delivered.
– Participate in assigned projects or committees.
– Perform other related duties as assigned.
