AI Pay Analysis: The hourly rate of $15 for the role of “Michigan – Supervisor- General Merchandise (Part-time) U-C1-C1 U-C4-C4” in Muskegon, MI, is relatively competitive but may vary depending on several factors. While part-time supervisory roles in retail typically range from $14 to $20 per hour, the average pay often hovers around $16 to $18 per hour in Michigan. The exact competitiveness of this rate can depend on the specific responsibilities of the role, the employer’s reputation, and any additional benefits offered. Job description:
Barnes & Noble College serves as a retail partner for nearly 800 colleges and universities across the nation, creating a unique retail environment centered on providing essential educational content, tools, and merchandise within vibrant campus settings. Our teams engage directly with a diverse customer base—including students, faculty, administration, alumni, and the general public—to deliver exceptional customer service while facilitating the sale or rental of books and a range of other products and services tailored to the academic community. We pride ourselves on being consistently recognized as a top workplace, where employees find joy in their contributions.

We are seeking a creative, motivated, adaptable, and customer-oriented individual to join our team as a part-time Supervisor in the General Merchandise department. This role involves working a flexible or established schedule year-round, assisting customers with school supplies, electronics, dorm essentials, convenience items, gifts, and apparel, while also supporting the management team in the day-to-day operations of the store. As a Supervisor, you will be a subject matter expert for the General Merchandise department, yet you will also maintain knowledge of other operational areas to ensure that we provide outstanding customer service.

The Supervisor in General Merchandise must demonstrate a high level of energy to thrive in this multifaceted role, ensuring that the sales floor is visually appealing and that merchandise is readily available. A deep understanding of department and store operations is essential, alongside a commitment to delivering exemplary customer service to our academic and co-curricular communities.

Expectations for this role include:

– Maintaining an active presence on the sales floor to properly hang, fold, shelve, and peg merchandise according to established planograms and general merchandising guidelines.
– Proficiently utilizing department-specific technology, such as CORE or Intrepid, to address customer inquiries, recommend products, place orders, locate items, and fulfill customer needs.
– Greeting customers, describing merchandise, recommending appropriate products, and processing sales transactions.
– Keeping the store and merchandise clean to sustain an inviting sales floor environment.
– Assisting with the processing of sales transactions involving cash, credit, or financial aid payments.
– Availability for part-time work on a year-round basis, with schedules that may vary according to store needs, totaling less than 30 hours per week.

Physical demands for this position include:

– Frequent movement throughout the store to access different departments and products.
– The ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods.
– Frequent lifting and occasionally reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and climbing ladders.

For those located in Michigan, the pay for the part-time General Merchandise Supervisor position starts at $15.00 per hour. Benefits available to employees include:

– Early access to earned wages through Daily Pay.
– Employee discounts.
– Paid sick time accrued based on hours worked.
– Eligibility to participate in a 401(k) plan after the completion of 1,000 hours worked in a 12-month period.
– Commuter benefits.

Please note that eligibility for each benefit may involve a waiting period and may require enrollment during designated periods.

COVID-19 Considerations:
Our stores adhere to all applicable federal, state, and local guidelines concerning social distancing and sanitization. Depending on campus requirements, candidates may need to provide proof of vaccination, and the use of face masks may be expected or mandated.

Qualifications for this position include:

– A minimum of 2 years of experience in a retail setting is preferred.
– Candidates must be at least 18 years old to be considered for employment.
– A high school diploma or GED is preferred.
– Exceptional customer service skills to ensure customers are matched with products to meet their needs.
– Basic reading, writing, and accounting skills are required.
– Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
– The ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
