Job description:

This position operates under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, where the Patient Care Technician (PCT) is responsible for assisting patients with their daily living activities and certain treatments, in accordance with established policies, procedures, and guidelines.

For casual employment roles, please note that there are no regularly scheduled work hours. However, employees must commit to fulfilling the minimum time requirements for the position while held, which includes at least 48 hours of work per month, with a minimum of 24 hours on weekends, and an annual requirement of 24 hours over holidays.

Responsibilities:
A typical day for a Patient Care Technician at MyMichigan Health involves:

  • (50%) Prioritizing and organizing care for assigned patients under the direction of the nurse, while performing basic nursing aide skills as outlined in orientation and competency guidelines.
  • (25%) Documenting treatments and pertinent observations in patient charts and providing a report to the team on completed tasks.
  • (25%) Maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly unit.

Certifications and Licensures:

  • PCT: MMH PCT/CNA/EMT/LPN Certification
  • Equivalent Experience: Candidates must possess one of the following certifications or credentials:

    • Internal MidMichigan Health Patient Care Technician certification
    • Current State of Michigan registry document as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
    • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification leading to licensure in Michigan
    • Completion of an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse program leading to licensure in Michigan
    • Successful completion of one semester of nursing clinical education from an Accredited Registered Nurse Program.
      Effective 11/22/2019, we also accept Medical Assistants who are Registered Medical Assistants (RMA) through American Medical Technologists (AMT), Certified Medical Assistants (CMA) through American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), or hold equivalent Medical Assistant Credentials, such as Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), etc. Current PCTs with an expired CNA certification, EMT certification, or lapsed LPN license may pursue internal MidMichigan Health Patient Care Technician certification.
  • BLS: Basic Life Support certification required within 3 months of hire or transfer.
  • Team Advanced: Techniques for Effective Aggression Management training required within 6 months of hire or transfer.

Required Education:

  • A high school diploma or GED is required.

  • Address age-specific needs of the population served in accordance with departmental standards and procedures.
  • Act in accordance with procedures during all medical center emergency situations.

  • Perform any additional duties as assigned.

Experience, Training, and Skills:

  • Knowledge of medical terminology is essential.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with individuals and groups, and to convey ideas and concepts clearly.
