Job description:

Under the supervision of the Program Coordinator, this role involves providing essential peer support services to individuals experiencing mental illness, as well as those with co-occurring conditions related to substance use disorders, as part of a multidisciplinary team. The incumbent will implement treatment plans designed to facilitate recovery goals and enhance independence and community integration.

This is a full-time, benefited position located at the Community Mental Health (CMH) Complex in Grand Haven, MI. The standard working hours are from Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with occasional travel required to various county locations as necessary.

Essential Job Functions
The primary responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

• Delivering direct services to consumers in alignment with established treatment plans.
• Introducing consumers to CMHOC programs and services.
• Providing encouragement and serving as a role model by demonstrating competence in recovery and the ongoing development of coping skills.
• Sharing personal recovery experiences and embodying the principles of recovery, both individually and in group settings.
• Actively participating in person-centered planning activities, potentially serving as a facilitator.
• Motivating consumers to make healthy choices concerning their psychosocial rehabilitation and recovery objectives.
• Transporting consumers to organized activities and fostering their full engagement in treatment plans.
• Ensuring the safety of consumers with various disabilities.
• Engaging in team meetings to contribute to collaborative care.
• Reviewing and discussing consumers’ treatment plans with professional staff.
• Suggesting modifications to consumers’ goals, objectives, or placement plans as appropriate.
• Upholding the security and confidentiality of clinical documentation according to statutory requirements and the policies of the Department of Community Health and Community Mental Health.
• Monitoring recipient rights and adhering to reporting standards set forth by the Mental Health Code and the Community Mental Health Services Board procedures.

Required Education, Training, and Experience
Candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED. Lived experiences related to mental illness, developmental disabilities, or substance use disorders are highly regarded. Applicants should have been a recipient of public or private mental health treatment and/or services for no less than one year, during which they experienced significant life disruptions due to their mental health conditions. Personal experience in navigating complex mental health treatment systems is essential.

Licenses and Certifications
Candidates must be able to obtain the Michigan Certified Peer Support Specialist designation within six months of hire, which requires prior receipt of mental health services through the public mental health system. A valid Michigan driver’s license is also required.

• Comprehensive understanding of recovery principles and an eagerness to share one’s personal recovery journey with others.
• Strong interpersonal skills for engaging positively and professionally with consumers facing severe mental health challenges, their families, and various stakeholders.
• Capacity to work effectively both in a collaborative team environment and independently.
• Keen observational skills to identify behavioral changes in consumers.
• Familiarity with de-escalation and crisis response techniques.
• Knowledge of hygiene and sanitation protocols to minimize cross-contamination and prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
• Ability to operate relevant equipment, including vehicles.
• Basic computer literacy for maintaining electronic case documentation and records.

Notes:
Oral and written proficiency in Spanish, Cambodian, Lao, or any language pertinent to the demographic groups within the population is strongly preferred.

Physical Requirements:

• Sufficient visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses, to effectively observe clients and identify signs of behavioral changes or adverse medication reactions that may require intervention.
• Capability to bend, reach, and lift objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

Working Conditions:
Services may be delivered in diverse settings, including office environments, Clubhouse programs, and community locations, such as consumers’ homes.
