Job description:
Responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the pharmacy department, the incumbent will be accountable for workflow management, clinical management of patients, continuous quality improvement, adherence to policies and procedures, compliance with internal and external regulatory agencies, pharmacy sales, expense control, inventory management, and maintaining a positive image through the precise filling of prescriptions while ensuring the highest level of customer service for patients, providers, and pharmaceutical and payer partners. The role also involves the development and protection of departmental assets.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Experience
- Ensure that pharmacy personnel deliver hospitable service, providing accurate information while maintaining a courteous, friendly, and efficient atmosphere.
- Address customer inquiries and complaints to enhance and uphold the overall reputation of the pharmacy department.
Operations
- Manage the daily operations of the pharmacy department.
- Drive improvement in prescription volume, pharmacy sales, profitability, and public perception through accurate prescription filling and exceptional service to patients, prescribers, pharmaceutical manufacturers, payers, and health systems.
- Report prescription errors immediately and adhere to company policies and procedures concerning prescription incidents and the Quality Improvement Program.
- Comply with all federal and state laws and regulations, as well as company policies governing pharmaceuticals; maintain required records and documentation.
- Recommend and implement asset protection controls and procedures to mitigate profit loss.
- Enhance and maintain the pharmacy department’s cleanliness, maintenance, and overall appearance to ensure customer and employee safety and well-being, while ensuring adherence to applicable government regulations and laws.
- Oversee cash management processes, including oversight of the store’s safe, electronic register readings, cash withdrawals, daily cash reports, and related documentation.
- Ensure the proper functioning and maintenance of pharmacy department systems and equipment.
- Stay informed about third-party pharmacy business opportunities, overseeing the administration and implementation of third-party pharmacy systems and procedures to mitigate payment rejections. Timely resolution of third-party issues and re-submission of rejected claims is crucial.
- Manage and control Prescription Department inventory, adhering to company procurement procedures while recommending and ordering merchandise from appropriate sources.
People and Performance Management
- Supervise pharmacy department team members to ensure compliance with necessary functions and adherence to company policies and procedures. Confirm that all pharmacy personnel hold appropriate licensure and are thoroughly trained on essential functions regarding payer and pharmaceutical contractual obligations.
- Regularly reaffirm with pharmacy personnel their responsibilities regarding the dispensing of prescriptions in good faith.
Training and Personal Development
- Conduct self-audits to assess performance and establish personal objectives and performance standards.
- Maintain awareness of developments in the pharmacy, healthcare, and retail management fields relevant to job responsibilities, integrating these insights into practice.
Communications
- Foster and develop strong working relationships with physicians and other healthcare professionals, collaborating effectively with the Local Specialty Pharmacy staff.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) from an accredited institution.
- Current pharmacist license in relevant states within the district (or willingness to obtain within one year, in accordance with district guidelines).
- A minimum of one year of pharmacy experience, encompassing prescription filling and verification, records and legal compliance, pharmacy operations, as well as proficiency in pharmacy software and technology systems and insurance.
- Experience in dispensing prescriptions that reflects a robust understanding of applicable state and federal controlled substance laws.
- Completion of specialized training related to medications and disease states, or sufficient practical experience to provide specialized services offered at clinic locations (e.g., HIV, Organ Transplant, Oncology).
