Job Title: Police Cadet

Company: City of Auburn Hills

Location: Auburn Hills, MI

Pay: $17 per hour

AI Pay Analysis: An hourly rate of $17 for a Police Cadet position in Auburn Hills, MI appears to be on the lower end of the pay scale when compared to industry standards for similar roles in the region. According to available data, police cadet salaries can vary widely, often ranging from $20 to $25 per hour depending on the department and local cost of living. Auburn Hills, being part of the Detroit metropolitan area, may also offer competitive rates due to the demand for law enforcement personnel. Therefore, while $17 per hour might attract applicants, it may not be sufficient to compete effectively for quality candidates in the current job market.

Job description:
The Auburn Hills Police Department (AHPD) is dedicated to delivering exceptional law enforcement services to the residents, businesses, students, and visitors of Auburn Hills. In recognition of our commitment to professional standards, AHPD achieved voluntary accreditation in 2019, earning a place among just 19 of over 400 police agencies in Michigan to meet the rigorous benchmarks set by the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police. Our department responds to nearly 30,000 calls annually within a 16.64 square mile jurisdiction, serving a community of more than 25,000 residents. AHPD embraces a community policing model, fostering meaningful engagement with our community through training initiatives and a diverse range of law enforcement programs. Our mission is to enhance the safety and quality of life in our community by offering a broad spectrum of traditional and innovative services while upholding constitutional and human rights. All departmental members are expected to maintain accountability for their conduct at all times.

This is a part-time, non-sworn, uniformed position within the Support Services Division. The Cadet Program aims to expose Criminal Justice college students to real-world law enforcement experiences. Cadets will receive training in Community Policing and Problem-Oriented Policing, along with other opportunities within the Department. They will be assigned to areas where assistance is needed while also ensuring continuous service at the front desk, available 24/7.

Preferred Qualifications:
(A) Graduation from high school or an equivalent GED, with current enrollment in a Criminal Justice program or related field of study; participants enrolled in other academic programs must receive prior approval from the Chief of Police or their designee.
(B) Possession of a valid driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
(C) Proficiency in computer usage and electronic data processing; familiarity with contemporary police practices and procedures.
(D) Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively interact with the public; excellent verbal and written communication skills; capacity to manage stressful situations effectively.

Compensation for this position is set at $17.00 per hour.
