Job Title: Police Cadet

Company: City of Auburn Hills

Location: Auburn Hills, MI

Pay: $17 per hour

AI Pay Analysis: An hourly rate of $17 for a Police Cadet in Auburn Hills, MI, is on the lower end of the compensation spectrum for this role. Typically, police cadets in Michigan earn between $18 to $25 per hour, depending on factors such as experience, the specific agency, and local cost of living. Given the responsibilities and training involved in law enforcement positions, $17 per hour may not be competitive, particularly for cadets who might expect to transition into full-time positions with higher pay after completing training. Overall, this rate may struggle to attract candidates, especially when considering the rising cost of living and competitive job market in the area.

Job description:

The Auburn Hills Police Department (AHPD) is committed to delivering exceptional law enforcement services to the residents, businesses, students, and visitors of Auburn Hills. In 2019, AHPD gained voluntary accreditation, recognizing it as one of only 19 police agencies out of more than 400 in Michigan dedicated to upholding the highest standards of law enforcement as established by the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police.

Each year, the department responds to nearly 30,000 calls for service within a jurisdiction of 16.64 square miles, encompassing over 25,000 residents. AHPD emphasizes a community-oriented policing approach, ensuring personnel routinely engage with community members, conduct training throughout the city, and offer a diverse range of law enforcement programs. Our mission focuses on enhancing the safety and quality of life within our community, providing an array of traditional and innovative services while safeguarding constitutional and human rights. All members of this department are held accountable for their conduct at all times.

This position is a part-time, non-sworn role within the Support Services Division, specifically designed for Criminal Justice college students to gain hands-on experience in police work. The Cadet Program aims to train and equip cadets in Community Policing and Problem-Oriented Policing while exposing them to various opportunities within the department. Cadets will be placed where their services are most needed and will help maintain 24/7 operations at the front desk.

Preferred Qualifications:
(A) Graduation from high school or possession of a GED equivalent, with current enrollment in a criminal justice program or a related field of study; students in other disciplines may need preapproval from the Chief of Police or designated representative.
(B) A valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
(C) A working knowledge of computers and electronic data processing, alongside an understanding of modern police practices and procedures.
(D) The ability to effectively interact with the public and communicate clearly both verbally and in writing, as well as the capability to manage stressful situations.

Compensation: The pay rate for this position is $17.00 per hour.
