Job duties will involve frequent interaction with other employees and access to confidential and proprietary information, which may occur under both supervised and unsupervised conditions. As an R&D Staff Chemist, you will be responsible for generating accurate, high-quality, and defensible analytical results through analytical and physical testing of raw materials used in product manufacturing. Timely responses to analytical inquiries, including those related to field failures, product development challenges, and raw material or manufacturing issues, will be expected. You will effectively communicate analytical findings and conclusions while adhering to safety, quality, and housekeeping guidelines in the laboratory. You will be tasked with resolving problems associated with raw materials and coatings through analytical measurement and analysis procedures. Additionally, you will serve as a resource for analytical techniques, polymer characterization, and problem-solving initiatives.

This role involves the development of new analytical and physical testing methods, as well as modifications of existing procedures to meet business demands, including innovation, enhanced characterization, and effective problem resolution. You will also act as a collaborative partner with the Product Coatings Group, which includes automotive and Global Supply Chain sectors. Recommendations for new chemical testing instrumentation and analytical techniques will also be part of your responsibilities. Collaborative work with colleagues, chemists, and interns on instrument operation and analytical methodologies within Research and Development is integral to this position. Some travel, estimated at 5% domestically, is required.

The annual salary for this role is set at $107,788.78. You will be based at The Sherwin-Williams Company, located at 4440 Warrensville Center Road, Cleveland, OH 44128. Upon the completion of construction, anticipated in 2025, the individual selected for this position will primarily operate from the new Sherwin-Williams Global Technology Center in Brecksville, Ohio.

Requirements for this position include a Bachelor’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) field, alongside five years of relevant experience as a Staff Chemist, R&D Research Assistant, or in a related role.

Special skills required for this position include:
– At least one year of analytical chemistry experience within an industrial R&D laboratory or academic research environment.
– Five years of experience characterizing reactive chemistry systems (e.g., epoxy) to discern structure-property relationships, employing analytical chemistry and materials science equipment such as FT-IR, DSC, TGA, UV/Vis, Raman, and NMR.
– Five years of utilizing analytical equipment to assess polymer and performance attributes for problem-solving and performance optimization, particularly concerning adhesion and mechanical failure in polymer-based coatings, including reactive or cross-linked systems.
– Three years of experience in characterizing the morphology of polymer materials using SEM, TEM, and optical microscopy.
– Three years of mechanical property testing experience (DSC and Instron) to evaluate polymer performance and structure-property relationships across 1K (acrylate) and 2K polymer/coating (epoxy) systems with various crosslinkers and inorganic fillers (pigments, etc.).
