Job description:
This role of Recreation Assistant Manager within the Therapeutic section of the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department entails providing support for the daily operations of adaptive and inclusive programming. The successful candidate will engage with participants of diverse abilities, ages, backgrounds, and identities. Key responsibilities encompass administrative tasks, fostering community relationships, budget and data management, delivering exceptional customer service, facilitating training, developing programs, leading initiatives, providing employee support, conducting participant assessments, and implementing risk management strategies. Programming areas of focus include adaptive aquatics, adaptive sports, inclusive fitness, and summer camps, among others.

Under supervision, the incumbent will assist in managing a recreational center or oversee recreational programs on a Citywide scale, undertaking related duties as necessary.

Key responsibilities may include:

– Assisting in the direction of programs, classes, activities, and special events at community recreational centers and associated grounds, or planning, organizing, and evaluating major recreational programs on a Citywide basis.
– Overseeing programming for participants with varying skill levels and assessing their safety needs, including those of novices, experts, elderly individuals, children, and those with special needs.
– Planning and coordinating competitive activities, sports leagues, and special events; officiating events or arranging for officiating; maintaining team standings and individual/group statistics.
– Promoting programs, activities, and events by managing the creation and distribution of promotional materials such as flyers, newsletters, and press releases.
– Ensuring consistent communication with interested parties regarding program policies, facility rules, and activity participation.
– Establishing partnerships with community providers to enhance programming, which may involve bringing services to city facilities or organizing off-site leisure trips.
– Addressing complaints and resolving issues as they arise.
– Supervising the upkeep of Recreation and Parks facilities, ensuring they are clean, maintained, and ready for participant use; taking corrective actions when necessary.
– Preparing facility spaces for recreational participation, which may require physical tasks such as organizing and arranging supplies or furniture.
– Managing the inventory and distribution of program equipment, materials, and supplies while overseeing requisition processes as needed for various programs and activities.
– Assisting in the instruction of program participants in various activities, including sports, arts and crafts, and games.
– Conducting formal training sessions for personnel and special groups within recreational specialty areas.
– Maintaining accurate records and preparing requisite reports, including financial or inventory documentation.

Minimum qualifications include a bachelor’s degree and two years of experience in recreation or education planning, organizing, or leadership, which can be substituted with equivalent experience. Upon completing the probationary period, candidates must possess a valid Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor certificate if assigned to aquatics programming. For those performing swim instruction, possession of a valid American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor’s certificate or Basic Swim Instructor’s certificate is required. Some positions may necessitate a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
