We are excited to announce an excellent opportunity for a proactive and results-driven individual to join our expanding team in Detroit, MI. Brown and Caldwell is seeking a Research Engineer who possesses a robust technical foundation in chemical and biological treatment processes. This role will involve supporting client-focused solids and energy pilot research initiatives, as well as collaborating on a national and global scale with our research and innovation teams to assess technologies and strategies for a diverse range of clients across the various service areas and geographies served by Brown and Caldwell.
This position offers the chance to contribute to numerous treatment planning and evaluation projects and to assist process engineering teams in enhancing project design, implementing technological innovations, and optimizing operations. Responsibilities will encompass coordinating and managing research projects with a technical emphasis on process evaluation, bench and pilot testing, modeling, and participating in design development for water, wastewater, advanced treatment, and water recycling projects. Key responsibilities include:
– Leading and developing research initiatives and studies related to solids and energy that inform process design across all of Brown and Caldwell’s practice areas.
– Maintaining industry connections to monitor current trends and informing our internal strategies for market engagement.
– Developing and overseeing the implementation of work plans focused on solids and energy processes.
– Providing innovative strategies and recommendations to integrate Brown and Caldwell’s research and innovation into project planning and execution, supporting coordination among the treatability laboratory and project delivery teams in alignment with Brown and Caldwell’s technical priorities.
– Ensuring quality assurance and quality control for experimental projects.
– Collaborating with various engineering disciplines, departments, and external offices to deliver a cohesive approach that leverages Brown and Caldwell’s treatability laboratory resources and strategic partnerships.
– Preparing research and engineering reports, technical memoranda, and related documentation.
– Actively engaging with clients to foster the development of new work opportunities.
– Understanding and ensuring compliance with relevant regulatory requirements and permitting processes.
– Contributing to professional publications in peer-reviewed journals and engaging with relevant associations.
Desired qualifications include:
– A Ph.D. in civil or environmental engineering with a focus on solids and energy, particularly anaerobic digestion.
– A minimum of 2 years of experience in water treatment testing.
– Strong written and verbal communication abilities, with proofs of success in publishing peer-reviewed research.
– Capacity to thrive in a diverse team environment.
– Proven ability to manage and deliver on multiple tasks while navigating competing priorities.
– A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
Salary Range: The anticipated starting salary for this position will be determined based on the employee’s primary work location, as well as skills, experience, and education. These ranges are subject to future adjustments. In Location A, the salary range is $65,000 – $88,000.
