Job description:
Under the general supervision of the Respiratory Therapy Supervisor, this role involves providing essential life-support, resuscitation, monitoring, and a variety of medical gas therapies to patients. Responsibilities include performing both invasive and non-invasive diagnostic procedures for patients in Intensive Care and General Practice Units. The position requires the maintenance of clinical expertise across various departmental assignments within HFHS, as designated. Effective communication with patients, colleagues, physicians, and other system staff regarding patient care needs is crucial. Accurate documentation of all patient care activities is required, alongside the supervision, direction, and delegation of tasks to Respiratory Therapists, Respiratory orients, externs, and students as necessary. Additionally, adequate patient billing information must be completed.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct patient assessments, develop care plans, and collaborate with other healthcare providers while delivering patient care for 100% of work hours.
- Appropriately delegate components of patient care to support staff, ensuring clear communication and guidance is provided.
- Serve as an active team member in patient care and staff mentoring.
- Facilitate communication with co-workers and other professionals, including physicians and nurses, to ensure optimal patient outcomes. Actively participate in daily bedside rounds.
- Uphold high standards of clinical excellence in alignment with departmental policies.
- Demonstrate proficiency in various departmental specialties and clinical areas, including life support and diagnostic equipment, displaying competency in specialized procedures and protocols across multiple IPD locations.
- Adhere to clinical productivity standards and maintain technical expertise through participation in professional associations and educational opportunities.
- Remain informed on developments in Respiratory Therapy by attending conferences, and engaging in in-services and peer reviews as appropriate.
- Carry out specific duties related to site assignments, which may include the cleaning, maintenance, and testing of equipment.
- Ensure timely documentation of patient care in accordance with departmental standards.
- Maintain awareness of patient safety issues within the clinic environment and during the use of equipment.
- Uphold patient confidentiality in accordance with HFHS HIPAA policies.
Education/Experience Required:
- Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapist program.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Therapy is preferred; a minimum of an Associate of Science Degree is required.
- Recent graduates of a Respiratory Therapy program or those with two years of relevant experience in a tertiary hospital setting are encouraged to apply.
Certifications/Licensures Required:
- Registration with the National Board of Respiratory Care.
- Current license as a Respiratory Therapist in the State of Michigan.
- Newly graduated therapists are allowed a 90-day period post-graduation to secure their registration and Michigan license; failure to do so may result in termination.
