Job description:
Responsible for managing patient scheduling, pre-registration, and insurance authorization for outpatient departments.
Essential Functions
- Respond to calls from patients, physicians, office staff, and peers, assessing the urgency of situations and providing appropriate referrals as necessary.
- Efficiently handle telephonic communications for the department by prioritizing, screening, and redirecting calls, as well as addressing inquiries, resolving routine matters, and taking messages.
- Schedule all patient appointments using the SMS scheduling system and collaborate with management to achieve departmental goals.
- Prepare and send confirmation letters to patients for appointments scheduled more than three days in advance, detailing the tests and necessary preparation.
- Conduct various outpatient registrations with professionalism, accuracy, customer-focus, and timeliness.
- Gather information from patient health insurance or managed care identification cards.
- Ensure that all printers are stocked with necessary forms, which may involve lifting and carrying cases of these materials; demonstrate proficiency with all relevant software and hardware.
- Liaise with individual physician offices and their managers to procure accurate scheduling information.
- Execute tasks with skill and responsibility as assigned; be prepared to undertake higher-level responsibilities as needed.
- Participate in all mandatory safety training programs, clearly outlining responsibilities related to general safety, departmental safety, and specific job-related hazards.
- Adhere to hospital exposure control plans regarding blood-borne and airborne pathogens.
- Exhibit respect and consideration for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and colleagues, fostering a professional and courteous environment.
- Promote effective working relationships and collaborate effectively with the department/unit team and inter-departmentally to achieve organizational goals and objectives.
- Oversee the TYSABRI Outreach: Unified Commitment to Health (TOUCH) program via the Biogen website.
Qualifications
Required
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- A minimum of one year of experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in registration/scheduling, as a unit secretary, or in medical billing.
- Typing proficiency of at least 30 words per minute.
- Demonstrated customer service experience.
- Prior telephone experience.
Preferred
- One year of secretarial training or equivalent experience.
- Familiarity with One Contact, Epic, Outlook, third-party validation insurance websites, and medical terminology.
