Description
The primary responsibility of the School Social Worker is to support students whose emotional and social challenges hinder their ability to fully benefit from the educational program. The social worker will also serve as a key liaison among parents/guardians, the school, and public or private agencies involved in student care, facilitating access to available services both within the school and in the community. Additionally, the social worker will mentor less experienced social workers and participate in our crisis response team to offer support to other schools during significant crisis events.

Key functions related to providing services for students eligible for special education due to emotional and social challenges include:

  • Conducting social work evaluations for students suspected of having emotional or behavioral issues that may qualify them for special education services.
  • Participating in multidisciplinary team meetings to assess evaluation results and make recommendations regarding eligibility.
  • Collaborating in Individualized Education Planning (IEP) meetings to determine the level of social work support required by students and developing annual goals and short-term objectives pertaining to the social and emotional needs of eligible students.
  • Delivering social work services as outlined in IEPs, including providing written evaluations on student progress.
  • Conducting functional behavior assessments and formulating behavior intervention plans in collaboration with IEP team members.
  • Training staff and assisting in the implementation of behavior intervention plans.
  • Maintaining accurate and confidential records for each student served.
  • Planning and developing activities with general education and collaborative teachers to support the inclusion of special education students displaying behavioral challenges in general education settings.
  • Mentoring other social workers who are seeking temporary approval as school social workers during their initial years of employment.
  • Offering pre-referral consultation to teachers and school leaders concerning students with behavioral and adjustment issues, and participating in child study team meetings for students referred for interventions.
  • Consulting with parents/guardians on family and community adjustments and guides to community resources.
  • Providing training and assistance to teachers in classroom management techniques to effectively address student behavioral issues.
  • Acting as a liaison between the school and community service agencies.
  • Conducting home visits for family consultation and assessment.
  • Supporting school teams in the development and execution of crisis response plans.
  • Assisting staff and parents during crises and trauma, while actively participating on crisis, trauma, and loss response teams to address major incidents.
  • Collaborating with the school team to create and implement school-wide behavior intervention strategies, including training on Conflict Prevention and Intervention or other methodologies to assist staff in effectively managing problem areas.
  • Offering social skills training to students as part of broader school-wide behavior intervention initiatives.
  • Undertaking additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in social work along with licensure/certification, including a School Social Worker endorsement or eligibility for temporary or full approval as a school social worker.
  • A minimum of two years of successful experience in school social work.
  • Proficiency in individual and group assessment and treatment techniques gained through experience.
  • Competence in formulating eligibility recommendations for students facing emotional and social challenges.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Familiarity with positive behavior intervention strategies and a proven record of developing and implementing behavior intervention plans.
  • Knowledge of necessary social skills for behavior modification and the ability to incorporate training into classroom activities.
  • Awareness of community resources and experience working with various agencies.
