Job description:
Under the general direction and with limited supervision, the Sergeant will assist in the planning, management, implementation, supervision, and execution of daily Security and Safety operations for Corewell Health. This role encompasses responsibility for all assigned buildings, properties, equipment, and officers. As an armed security supervisor, the incumbent will oversee daily shift operations, including decision-making authority even when the Lieutenant is present. Responsibilities also include assisting in the establishment of performance standards, staffing patterns, and departmental policies and procedures. This position may require Public Act 330 certification, granting the authority to arrest for misdemeanor offenses, and completion of the Michigan State Police PA330 certification requirements.
Essential Functions
- Coordinate security personnel responses to incoming requests and evolving situations.
- Establish and communicate specific work goals, along with quantitative and qualitative standards, for subordinates.
- Execute various duties at the assigned post while providing assistance to patients, visitors, and employees.
- Enforce hospital rules, regulations, and policies.
- Patrol the campus on foot, by vehicle, or via bike, remaining vigilant for suspicious activities and security violations.
- Appropriately exercise Police Authority to arrest for felonies and misdemeanors on Corewell Health property, in compliance with Michigan Law (PA 330).
- Utilize citation and ordinance enforcement authority responsibly under Michigan Law (PA 330) and local ordinances.
- Monitor operations in the Security Operations Center, including phone, alarm, camera, and radio traffic.
- Supervise assigned staff to ensure high-quality performance.
- Attend department supervisor meetings, organize shift meetings, and present at interdepartmental staff meetings and in-services.
- Uphold departmental, campus, and Corewell Health policies and procedures.
- Perform all duties and responsibilities of a Security Officer as needed or assigned.
- Schedule security officers’ work based on personnel availability, workload, and employee preference, while maintaining departmental payroll and attendance records.
- Train, appraise, evaluate, and address grievances; take disciplinary action when appropriate and make recommendations regarding the retention of probationary employees.
- Recommend new or revised policies and procedures as needed.
- Conduct investigations, including those related to alleged misconduct by security personnel.
- Ensure that incidents or situations are accurately recorded and reported to the appropriate individuals or departments.
- Assist in the collection and preparation of statistical data and reports related to incidents and services.
- Review security reports and incidents daily to brief officers on relevant information prior to their shifts.
- Assume responsibility for department equipment issued to Security Officers, ensuring any loss or damage is reported appropriately.
- Maintain a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
- Demonstrate a commitment to a collaborative teamwork philosophy within and between departments.
- Support Emergency Department staff with Hazmat/Decontamination procedures, including donning and doffing of PAPR and Tyvek suits, while providing security and maintaining order in decontamination areas.
- Assist nursing staff with the physical management and restraint of patients as ordered by a physician.
- Employ defensive tactics and approved MCOLES force continuum protocols, when necessary, to safeguard the lives and well-being of staff, patients, and visitors.
- Provide CPR/first aid in medical emergencies until trained medical personnel arrive, aligned with EMTALA regulations.
- Utilize proactive non-violent verbal de-escalation strategies to diffuse volatile situations involving patients, staff, and visitors without escalating into violence.
Qualifications
Required:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Two years of experience in a public or proprietary security organization, military security experience from the armed forces, or two years of public police experience.
- Valid Michigan Driver’s License (must be insurable under the hospital’s liability insurance guidelines upon hire).
- MCOLES certification in Michigan, qualifying every six months; Royal Oak and Dearborn certification must be obtained within one year upon hire.
- Michigan Concealed Pistol License (must be obtained upon hire).
- Certification in at least one preferred area within 180 days of employment.
- First Aid certification from the American Heart Association, valid for 180 days.
- Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification within 180 days.
- PA330 Certification from the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards within 90 days.
Preferred:
- Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice.
- Experience in Healthcare Supervisory or Leadership roles.
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) from either the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross.
