Description:
The primary responsibility of the school social worker is to support students whose emotional and social challenges hinder their ability to fully benefit from the educational program. The social worker will also function as a liaison among parents/guardians, the school, and public or private agencies responsible for student care and services, facilitating parents’ access to available resources within both the school and the broader community. Additionally, this role includes mentoring less experienced social workers and participating in the crisis response team to provide support to other schools during significant crises.

Core responsibilities related to supporting students eligible for special education with emotional and social challenges include:
– Conducting social work evaluations for students suspected of having emotional or behavioral issues potentially qualifying them for special education services.
– Participating in Multi-Disciplinary team meetings to review evaluation results and make eligibility recommendations.
– Engaging in Individual Educational Planning (IEP) meetings to determine the level of social work support required by students and to develop annual goals and short-term instructional objectives regarding their social and emotional needs.
– Implementing social work services as outlined in IEPs, including providing written evaluations on student progress.
– Conducting functional behavior assessments and formulating behavior intervention plans in collaboration with IEP team members.
– Training staff and assisting them in the application of behavior intervention plans.
– Maintaining accurate confidential records for each student served.
– Collaborating with general education and collaborative teachers to design activities that promote the inclusion of special education students with behavioral challenges in the general education classroom.
– Mentoring other social workers who qualify for temporary approval as school social workers during their initial years of employment.
– Conducting pre-referral consultations for teachers and school leaders regarding students exhibiting behavioral or adjustment issues, as well as participating in child study team meetings for referred students.
– Offering consultation to parents/guardians about family and community adjustment, as well as the utilization of community resources.
– Providing guidance and training to teachers on effective classroom management strategies to address student behavior issues.
– Serving as an intermediary between the school and community service agencies.
– Conducting home visits for family consultation and evaluation.
– Assisting school teams in the creation and execution of crisis response plans.
– Supporting staff and parents in coping with crises or trauma, while also participating in response teams for major incidents.
– Aiding the school team in establishing and implementing school-wide behavior intervention strategies, including training on Conflict Prevention and Intervention techniques.
– Delivering social skills training to students as part of broader school-wide behavior intervention approaches.
– Performing other duties as assigned.

Requirements:
– Master’s degree in social work with licensure/certification, including a School Social Worker endorsement or eligible for temporary or full approval as a school social worker.
– A minimum of two years of successful experience in school social work.
– Proficiency in individual and group assessment and treatment techniques acquired through practical experience.
– Capacity to formulate eligibility recommendations for students with emotional and social challenges.
– Excellent oral and written communication skills.
– Familiarity with positive behavior intervention strategies and a proven track record in developing and implementing behavior intervention plans.
