The primary responsibility of the school social worker is to support students experiencing emotional and social challenges that impede their ability to fully benefit from the educational program. The social worker will serve as a vital link among parents or guardians, the school, and public or private agencies responsible for student care and services, assisting families in accessing available resources within the school and the broader community. Additionally, the social worker is expected to mentor less experienced social workers and to be part of the crisis response team, providing support to other schools during significant incidents.

Essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following responsibilities for students eligible for special education who are facing emotional or social challenges:
– Conduct social work evaluations for students suspected of having emotional or behavioral issues that may qualify them for special education services.
– Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to review evaluation results and make recommendations regarding eligibility.
– Engage in Individualized Educational Planning (IEP) meetings to determine the necessary level of social work support for each student, developing annual goals and short-term instructional objectives related to their social and emotional needs.
– Provide social work services as outlined in IEPs, documenting written evaluations on student progress.
– Conduct functional behavior assessments and develop behavior intervention plans in collaboration with IEP team members.
– Offer training to staff and assist them in implementing behavior intervention plans effectively.
– Maintain accurate and confidential records for each student served.
– Collaborate with general education and collaborative teachers to develop activities that promote the inclusion of special education students with behavioral challenges.
– Mentor other social workers who are newly approved or temporarily approved as school social workers during their initial years in the role.
– Consult with teachers and school leaders about students facing behavioral and adjustment issues, participating on the child study team when referrals for interventions are made.
– Advise parents and guardians regarding family and community adjustment while facilitating the utilization of community resources.
– Provide training and support to teachers aimed at enhancing classroom management skills for addressing student behavior issues effectively.
– Act as a liaison between the school and community service agencies.
– Conduct home visits for family consultation and evaluation purposes.
– Assist school teams in formulating and executing crisis response plans.
– Support staff and parents during crises or traumatic events, participating in crisis, trauma, and loss response teams to address significant incidents.

– Facilitate social skills training for students as part of comprehensive behavior intervention strategies.
– Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements:
– A Master’s degree in social work and licensure/certification with a School Social Worker endorsement or eligibility for temporary or full approval as a school social worker.
– A minimum of two years of successful experience in school social work.
– Proficiency in individual and group assessment and treatment techniques acquired through experience.
– Ability to formulate eligibility recommendations for students presenting emotional or social challenges.
– Strong verbal and written communication skills.
– In-depth knowledge of positive behavior intervention strategies and relevant experience in creating and implementing behavior intervention plans.
