Description:
The primary responsibility of the school social worker is to assist students whose emotional and social challenges hinder their ability to fully benefit from their educational experience. This role includes acting as a liaison among parents or guardians, school personnel, and public or private agencies responsible for student care and services, thereby enabling parents to access available resources within the school and community. Additionally, the social worker will serve as a mentor to less experienced colleagues and participate in the crisis response team to provide support to other schools during significant crisis events.

Key responsibilities include:
– Conducting social work evaluations for students suspected of having emotional or behavioral issues that may qualify them for special education services.
– Participating in Multi-Disciplinary team meetings to review evaluation results and make eligibility recommendations.
– Engaging in Individual Educational Planning (IEP) meetings to determine the level of social work support required for eligible students and to develop annual goals and short-term instructional objectives tailored to their social and emotional needs.
– Delivering social work services as outlined in IEPs, including providing written evaluations on student progress.
– Conducting functional behavior assessments and collaborating with IEP team members to create behavior intervention plans.
– Offering training and support to staff in implementing behavior intervention plans effectively.
– Maintaining accurate and confidential records for each student served.
– Collaborating with general education and collaborative teachers to design activities that promote the inclusion of special education students experiencing behavioral challenges in the general education setting.
– Mentoring social workers who are in the process of obtaining temporary approval as school social workers during their initial years of employment.
– Providing pre-referral consultation to teachers and school leaders regarding students facing behavioral or adjustment issues and participating in child study team meetings for students referred for interventions.
– Consulting with parents and guardians on family dynamics and community resources available for support.
– Delivering training and guidance to teachers to enhance classroom management skills aimed at addressing student behavior issues.
– Acting as a liaison between the school and community service agencies.
– Conducting home visits for family consultations and evaluations.
– Assisting school teams in developing and implementing crisis response plans.
– Supporting staff and parents during crises or trauma, including participation in crisis, trauma, and loss response teams to address significant incidents.
– Aiding the school team in the development and execution of school-wide behavior intervention strategies and providing training on conflict prevention and intervention techniques.
– Facilitating social skills training for students as part of comprehensive school-wide behavior intervention efforts.
– Performing other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:
– A Master’s degree in social work and licensure/certification with a School Social Worker endorsement or eligibility for temporary or full approval as a school social worker.
– A minimum of two years of successful experience in school social work.
– Proficiency in individual and group assessment and treatment techniques gained through relevant experience.
– Capability to formulate eligibility recommendations for students with emotional and social challenges.
– Excellent oral and written communication skills.
– In-depth knowledge of positive behavior intervention strategies and proven experience in the development and implementation of behavior intervention plans.
