Description:
The primary responsibility of the school social worker is to support students whose emotional and social challenges hinder their ability to fully benefit from the educational program. The social worker will serve as a vital link between parents or guardians, the school, and public or private agencies involved in student care and services, thereby assisting families in accessing available resources within the school and the community. Additionally, this role includes mentoring less experienced social workers and participating on our crisis response team to offer support to other schools during significant incidents.

Key responsibilities related to serving students eligible for special education with emotional and social difficulties include:
– Conducting social work evaluations for students suspected of having emotional or behavioral issues, which may qualify them for special education services.
– Participating in Multi-Disciplinary team meetings to review evaluation results and make eligibility recommendations.
– Engaging in Individual Educational Planning (IEP) meetings to determine the necessary social work support for students and developing annual goals and short-term instructional objectives that address the social and emotional needs of those eligible.
– Delivering social work services in alignment with IEP goals and objectives, and providing written evaluations of student progress.
– Conducting functional behavior assessments and collaborating with IEP team members to develop behavior intervention plans.
– Providing training and support to staff for implementing behavior intervention plans.
– Maintaining confidential records for each student served.
– Designing and planning activities with general education and collaborative teachers to promote the inclusion of special education students with behavioral challenges in mainstream classrooms.
– Mentoring new social workers eligible for temporary approval as school social workers during their initial years of service.
– Offering pre-referral consultation to teachers and school leaders regarding students experiencing behavioral and adjustment issues, and participating in child study team meetings for students referred for interventions.
– Consulting with parents and guardians about family and community adjustments and the use of community resources.
– Training and assisting teachers in developing effective classroom management skills to better address student behavior challenges.
– Acting as a liaison between the school and community service agencies.
– Conducting home visits for family consultation and evaluation.
– Assisting school teams in the formulation and execution of crisis response plans.
– Supporting staff and parents in navigating crises and trauma, while serving on crisis, trauma, and loss response teams to address significant incidents.

Requirements:
– Master’s degree in social work and licensure/certification with a School Social Worker endorsement or eligibility for temporary or full approval as a school social worker.
– A minimum of two years of successful school social work experience.
– Proficient in individual and group assessment and treatment techniques acquired through practical experience.
– Ability to formulate eligibility recommendations for students experiencing emotional and social difficulties.
– Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
– Demonstrated knowledge of positive behavior intervention strategies and successful experience in developing and implementing behavior intervention plans.
