The primary function of the Dental Assistant is to enhance the efficiency of our clinicians by effectively delivering the Perfect Patient Experience (PPE), thereby fostering a Patient for Life (PFL) relationship. Dental Assistants perform a broad range of duties encompassing patient care, administrative tasks, and laboratory support. Responsibilities include preparing patients for oral examinations and assisting other dental professionals in delivering treatment for the teeth, mouth, and gums. Successful dental assistants collaborate well with colleagues, including specialty dental assistants, patients, and front office staff, while contributing ideas in a constructive and affirming manner. A proficient dental assistant actively listens, thoughtfully considers others’ suggestions, honors commitments, maintains open communication regarding work progress, and approaches challenges with a solution-oriented mindset.

For those Dental Assistants assigned to specialty areas such as Endodontics, Oral Surgery, Orthodontics, Periodontics, or Pedodontics, primary responsibilities include supporting clinicians within these specialties, which may necessitate additional training.

Responsibilities:

  • Execute functions in alignment with the state’s Dental Auxiliaries Table of Permitted Duties.
  • Actively engage in the PPE by ensuring that patients remain focused on optimal treatment while addressing their individual needs and concerns.
  • Escort patients between the front desk and treatment areas, introducing them to team members as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with front and back office teams to ensure a seamless orthodontic schedule.
  • Maintain a clean, sterile, and inviting environment.
  • Sterilize and disinfect instruments and equipment; clean operatories following state infection control guidelines.
  • Prepare patients for treatment and assist the dentist to facilitate efficient and quality dental care.
  • Upon the clinician’s direction, efficiently complete radiographs and intraoral photographs of patients.
  • Prepare tray setups for dental procedures and ensure adequate supply levels in each operatory, replenishing as necessary.
  • Maintain a clear and dry field in the patient’s mouth using suction or other devices.
  • Provide postoperative and general oral health care instructions to patients as directed by the clinician.
  • Accurately record patient charting and clinician notes in the digital patient chart as required.
  • Support patient care by presenting treatment records, consent forms, and health histories to the clinician before treatment.
  • Ensure equipment is maintained per manufacturer guidelines.
  • Collaborate with the Lead Dental Assistant to guarantee that clinical supplies are adequately stocked.
  • Utilize technology proficiently and provide training on its operation to others.
  • Participate in daily morning huddles, monthly team meetings, and any additional meetings as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • Equivalent to a high school diploma or general education degree (GED), alongside completion of training courses mandated by the state for certification, licensure, or registration.
  • Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations as required by applicable state regulations.
  • Specialty Dental Assistants must possess and sustain a valid driver’s license and automobile insurance, with verification through a background and motor vehicle record check at the time of hire.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to multiple offices daily in a timely manner; reliable transportation is essential.
  • Alternate transportation arrangements must be in place if a valid driver’s license and automobile insurance are not available.

Preferred:

  • One-year certificate from an accredited college or technical school, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
