Job description:

As a key member of the Student Leadership & Involvement team, the Coordinator plays a vital role in enhancing student learning and campus life at Michigan Technological University through strong co-curricular experiences focused on education, social engagement, and leadership development. Reporting directly to the Assistant Director of Student Leadership and Involvement, this position is responsible for the planning, execution, and evaluation of leadership development programs and community service initiatives. Furthermore, the Coordinator will provide advisement to the Undergraduate Student Government, assist in the organization of department-led events, and support divisional initiatives as required.

Responsibilities and Essential Duties

  • Act as the primary contact and resource for assigned Registered Student Organizations (RSOs).
  • Process new RSOs in compliance with Board of Trustees and Student Leadership and Involvement policies.
  • Maintain comprehensive records and archives for RSOs via Involvement Link, the Student Leadership and Involvement drive, and hard copy files.
  • Review RSO constitutions and by-laws, advising organizations on necessary updates and revisions.
  • Offer consultation and guidance to RSOs regarding organizational management, recruitment, fundraising, financial management, event planning, leadership development, and university policies.
  • Co-advise the Undergraduate Student Government, assisting with leadership development, elections, programming, and transitions.
  • Coordinate the leadership pathway program in collaboration with other Student Affairs departments.
  • Direct the annual implementation of the LeaderShape Institute.
  • Develop innovative leadership development opportunities for students and student organizations while sustaining established offerings such as the HuskyLEAD leadership series, GRIT leadership workshop, and LeaderShape’s Catalyst program.
  • Organize the annual Student Leadership Awards.
  • Oversee the administration and maintenance of the community service opportunities database and community organization information listing, and train users accordingly.
  • Promote and develop service opportunities for the campus community, including initiatives like Make a Difference Day and Alternative Spring Break service trips.
  • Maintain certification as an organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Award and annually certify qualifying students.
  • Provide consultation and assistance to other Student Affairs departments and student organizations on leadership development and community service opportunities.
  • Assist in the planning of department-led events, including Late Night Programming and Tech Traditions.
  • Develop and manage departmental budgets, ensuring alignment with data and event requirements.
  • Contribute to marketing departmental events and initiatives while managing social media accounts.
  • Gather and analyze program data to understand student needs, learning outcomes, and program effectiveness.
  • Collaborate in the development of policies and procedures prioritizing student success and well-being.
  • Serve on various committees within the department, division, and university.
  • Flexibly adapt to work evening and weekend hours as necessary.
  • Foster an inclusive, welcoming, and professional work environment for staff, students, and visitors.
  • Engage in continuous improvement initiatives to streamline processes.
  • Apply safety-related knowledge and practices in daily work.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience demonstrating comparable skills.

Required Experience

  • A minimum of one year of experience in or associated with university student organizations.
  • Proven experience in planning, organizing, and executing significant events and projects.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

  • A Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience demonstrating comparable skills.
  • Experience advising student organizations and working with university student government entities.
  • Familiarity with online student organization platforms and experience facilitating leadership training and development.
  • Experience with community service agencies and volunteer management platforms such as GivePulse.
