GENERAL SUMMARY
- Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN), assist in the implementation of care management for patients within your scope of practice and support patient education initiatives as directed.
- Monitor the milieu and patients, ensuring documentation and reporting are completed as required, while taking proactive measures to maintain a safe unit environment.
- Answer telephone calls and direct them appropriately.
- Prepare medical records for new admissions.
- Transport and/or accompany patients or prospective patients utilizing hospital vehicles.
- Collaborate with the multi-disciplinary team in the development of patient master treatment plans as needed.
- Accurately take and document patient vital signs, height, and weight.
- Oversee therapeutic interactions and the overall environment to ensure the provision of appropriate care.
- Monitor patient status under the direction of the charge nurse.
- Make patient beds as needed or upon request from a supervisor.
- Assist in the collection of body fluid specimens and prepare all necessary laboratory forms/slips.
- Record physician orders as received.
- Support patients with their activities of daily living (ADLs) and address personal needs and belongings.
- Provide comfort, reassurance, and support to patients, promptly responding to call lights and verbal requests.
- Conduct searches of patient belongings and rooms as assigned.
- Maintain an adequate supply of materials necessary for the performance of duties.
- Stay informed about current programs and explain them as necessary.
- Complete all documentation in a timely manner, adhering to policy and procedure.
- Measure blood glucose levels using a glucometer as directed by the RN.
- Obtain peripheral venous blood specimens, ensuring proper labeling and sending to the laboratory.
- Conduct peer reviews as required.
- Train and orient new employees as assigned.
- Interact courteously with patients, visitors, co-workers, and others.
- Responsively address the needs of patients, colleagues, and other stakeholders in a timely manner.
- Treat all individuals, including patients, visitors, and co-workers, with respect and dignity at all times.
- Conduct facility tours as assigned.
- Accept guidance from the on-duty RN in a respectful and timely manner.
- Attend mandatory training sessions and staff meetings.
- Maintain a clean and safe working environment.
- Comply with all infection control and safety policies and procedures.
- Uphold all HIPAA and confidentiality regulations.
- Assist other departments, including Dietary, Housekeeping, Maintenance, and Counseling, as needed.
- Notify the RN when leaving the unit for breaks or lunch.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Specific Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- A willingness and ability to receive immediate training in obtaining vital signs; previous training or experience is preferred.
- Ability to successfully complete department-specific competencies during the orientation period.
- Physical capability, with or without accommodation, to perform actions such as fingering, grasping, kneeling, lifting up to 20 pounds, pulling, pushing, reaching, and executing repetitive movements.
- Sensory and communicative skills, with or without accommodation, to feel, hear, see, and speak effectively.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the disease concept and 12-Step recovery programs.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to concentrate while performing tasks.
- Ability to prioritize multiple demands efficiently.
- Proficient in computer systems.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Post-high school training as a medical assistant or equivalent is preferred.
- A minimum of 3-6 months of previous work experience in a customer service and/or patient service environment is required.
CERTIFICATION/LICENSES REQUIRED
- A valid driver’s license obtained prior to hire or job transfer date, with no DUIs or OWIs in the last five years.
- Must obtain and maintain CPI certification within 120 days of employment.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) to be acquired within 120 days of hire or transfer date.
