Job description:

Van Drivers are tasked with the essential responsibility of transporting students along designated routes and to/from special excursions in agency vehicles. This role demands the maintenance of the vehicle in a safe operating condition while ensuring the safety of students during transport and assisting with routine agency deliveries or transports as needed.

The Van Drivers are accountable for the operation of the vehicles and should possess a foundational knowledge of the role and purpose of nonprofit organizations, alongside a clear understanding of the agency’s mission and objectives. Professional appearance and representation of the agency within the community are paramount. Engaging with individuals in a customer service-oriented manner is essential for providing all clients with assurance regarding student safety.

Duties and Responsibilities

Client Transportation

  1. Prioritizes passenger safety above all else.
  2. Operates agency vans to transport students, including those with disabilities, along predetermined routes and to/from the agency and field trips in a safe, courteous, and timely manner.
  3. Complies with speed limits and consistently practices defensive driving habits.
  4. Instructs and assists students and other passengers in safe loading and unloading procedures, including the use of seating, restraints, and special equipment, in both emergency and normal situations.
  5. Ensures adherence to transportation schedules.
  6. Evaluates incidents, complaints, accidents, and/or potential emergencies in accordance with agency policies to resolve or propose resolutions to these situations.
  7. Communicates relevant practices and incidents (e.g., rules, regulations, laws, procedures, suspicious situations) to the agency supervisor, parents, and alternate caregivers for appropriate follow-up action.
  8. Never leaves passengers unattended in the vehicle.
  9. Ensures the safety and well-being of students entering or exiting the van by positioning the vehicle appropriately to avoid the need for crossing the street.
  10. Waits until a child has safely entered their home before departing.
  11. Monitors passengers during transit to maintain order and ensure safety.
  12. Conducts a headcount of students boarding and disembarking from the van, checking the vehicle thoroughly at the end of each route to confirm no children remain inside.
  13. Administers first aid as necessary to address immediate health care needs of passengers.
  14. Responds appropriately to any disaster or potentially dangerous situation, prioritizing student safety.

Other Duties

  1. Upholds client confidentiality at all times.

  3. Performs thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle (e.g., fluid levels, tire pressure, exterior condition, windshield wipers) to ensure safety compliance and meet state regulations. Conducts weekly safety inspections, reporting any issues to the supervisor.
  4. Reports any maintenance issues to the supervisor immediately and refrains from operating unsafe vehicles.
  5. Fuels and maintains the assigned vehicle (e.g., oil, water, fuel) to ensure its safe operating condition.
  6. Prepares the vehicle for inclement weather, including scraping and cleaning windows and mirrors.
  7. Completes all required documentation, including route change sheets, timecards, and vehicle repair requests.
  8. Recommends optimal routes to the supervisor to enhance the efficiency of the agency’s transportation services.
  9. Communicates effectively with parents, students, teachers, and administrators to exchange pertinent information.
  10. Maintains the cleanliness and safety of vehicles, addressing both interior and exterior upkeep (e.g., cleaning floors, windows, and seats).
  11. Immediately reports all accidents involving the vehicle, personal injury, or property damage to the supervisor, and submits documentation (e.g., daily mileage and condition reports, incident reports) to support and convey relevant information.
  12. Collaborates with and assists fellow staff members as required or instructed by the supervisor.
  13. Ensures effective and timely communication, both verbal and written, with the supervisor and colleagues as appropriate.
  14. Consistently establishes and maintains program quality and professionalism.

Professional Development

Qualifications

Education

  1. A high school diploma or equivalent. Relevant job experience is preferred.
  2. Familiarity with vehicle maintenance and operation.
  3. Knowledge of first aid, disaster preparedness, and passenger/student safety.

Experience

  1. A minimum of one (1) year of experience in a similar position, ideally within a nonprofit context.

Special Requirements
