Job description:
Under general supervision, the Veterinarian – Animal Care and Control is responsible for delivering high-quality medical care to all animals housed within the shelter. This role includes the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients, as well as making recommendations regarding animal adoptability and monitoring the overall health of the shelter population. The Veterinarian also provides assistance to the shelter medical staff as needed.

Key Responsibilities:
– Conduct daily rounds to examine, diagnose, and prescribe treatment for shelter animals in compliance with established protocols.
– Perform emergency triage and stabilization of ill and injured animals.
– Administer vaccinations and provide routine preventive health services, which include educating clients.
– Execute routine sterilizations and surgeries, encompassing adult and pediatric sterilizations and other soft tissue procedures.
– Order and interpret diagnostic tests, recommending appropriate treatment plans based on results.
– Monitor the shelter population for indications of contagious diseases, developing and implementing outbreak response plans in collaboration with staff as necessary.
– Assist medical staff in organizing shifts and work area assignments to ensure optimal coverage.
– Provide oversight and training for shelter staff on euthanasia techniques, disease prevention, cross-contamination, and intestinal parasites.
– Assess the health and temperament of animals to facilitate informed adoption decisions.
– Examine, document, and address cases of neglect and cruelty, providing court testimony as required.
– Carry out humane euthanasia when deemed necessary.
– Administer medications via oral and injectable routes, including IV, IM, and SQ.
– Manage controlled substances and maintain accurate inventory logs.
– Ensure the accuracy and completeness of medical records.
– Communicate clear instructions to shelter staff and fellow veterinarians.
– Foster a positive work ethic and rapport with staff and clients.
– Oversee the procurement of medications, clinical supplies, and equipment.
– Provide humane treatment and care for all animals entrusted to the Detroit Animal Care and Control.
– Participate in committees, continuing education courses, and staff meetings.

Minimum Qualifications:
– Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree is required.

– One year of supervisory experience is preferred.
– Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered to satisfy the requirements of this position.

Licensing and Certifications:
– Authorization to work in the United States as a full-time employee is necessary.
– A valid State of Michigan Driver License is mandatory.
– Certification in Incident Command Structure Crisis Management must be obtained within six months of hire.
– Completion of FEMA ISC 100, 200, 700, and 800 Emergency Preparedness training is required within three months of hire.
– A DVM license from the State of Michigan is required and must be maintained.
