Job Summary
You will assist veterinary staff with the documentation and triage of all laboratory animal health cases and may perform various technical in-life procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support veterinary staff in documenting and triaging animal health cases as identified by technical staff and/or the Attending Veterinarian.
- Execute routine veterinary technical and husbandry tasks, including:
- Administering therapeutic measures via IV, IM, SQ, topical, and oral routes.
- Applying bandage and wrapping techniques.
- Clipping and trimming nails, hooves, and teeth.
- Performing venipuncture and vaginal swabs.
- Utilizing proficient animal restraint techniques.
- Monitoring critical care animals, including placing IVs and regulating fluid intake.
- Conducting follow-up observations on animals and documenting new findings.
- Monitoring animal health through visual assessments and adherence to established schedules.
- Generating treatment records and tracking follow-ups.
- Maintaining accurate medical records in compliance with regulatory requirements and study protocols.
- Following complex procedures to ensure proper animal health and treatment.
- Providing leadership and training to laboratory personnel regarding animal health best practices.
- Assisting in inventory management and stocking veterinary rooms, as well as maintaining organized exam areas.
- Performing tissue sampling, routine animal manipulations, and administering fluids or treatments as needed.
- Adhering to standard safety protocols while conducting housekeeping tasks related to studies.
- Assisting in surgical procedures and perioperative care, including anesthesia administration and supportive therapy.
- Supporting acclimation and behavioral management for animals under our care.
- Providing enrichment activities for laboratory animals based on facility and federal guidelines.
- Completing any other related duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications
- Education: An Associate’s Degree in a science-related field, or graduation from a veterinary technology program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Training Activities, or an equivalent program is preferred. A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Experience: A background of 0-2 years in a pre-clinical laboratory or clinical setting working with animals is preferred, especially within a contract research organization (CRO) involving multiple species.
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered a satisfactory substitute.
- Certification/Licensure: While non-licensed and non-certified candidates are encouraged to pursue licensure, AALAS (ALAT) certification is desired. A Veterinary Technician License (LVT) or CVT/RVT certification is preferred.
- Other: Candidates must demonstrate an understanding of Standard Operating Procedures coupled with excellent organizational, time management, and recordkeeping skills. Proficiency in basic word processing and strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential. Familiarity with routine veterinary technical and husbandry techniques is required.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to lift, move, manipulate, or hold heavy objects, including work materials, equipment, and animals, up to 50 pounds.
- Commitment to performing procedures that may involve talking, hearing, and standing or sitting for extended periods, as well as data entry, use of appropriate instruments, reaching with arms, working in confined spaces, and wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) as per OSHA regulations and company standards.
