The Youth & Teen Services Supervisor is a full-time, exempt position reporting to the Assistant Director of Public Services. This role involves direct supervision of eight positions within the Information Services Department, including librarians focused on youth and teen services, a Youth & Teen Programming Assistant, and an intern. Responsibilities entail hiring, onboarding, training, scheduling (including time-off requests and public desk schedules), performance management, and policy enforcement, as well as coordinating and supervising teen volunteer engagement in collaboration with the Adult Services Supervisor.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee youth and teen collections collaboratively with professional staff, ensuring alignment with departmental budgetary needs. This includes ordering materials, engaging with vendors, analyzing data, weeding collections, and maintaining physical space for print, digital, and Lakeshore kiosk collections. Actively recommend new and improved collections based on community needs and trends, and work with the Assistant Director to address material challenges in accordance with the Library’s Collection Development Policy and Reconsideration Form, providing appropriate communication to the Library Director, Board of Trustees, staff, and community as necessary.
- Serve as a public representative of the Library by coordinating all youth and teen programming, including story times, the Summer Reading Program, Teen Space, and the Teen Advisory Board (TAB). Responsible for creating and managing the youth/teen programming budget and coordinating outreach opportunities within the community, particularly at Lakeshore Park. Plan, implement, and promote programming services aimed at youth and teens.
- Manage staffing for Teen Space, monitoring activities involving teenagers in grades 7 through 12. Build relationships with teen patrons, oversee program planning and execution, enforce Library policies, and assist in teen interactions. Ensure setup and takedown of meeting rooms and equipment are conducted as necessary.
- Oversee the creation and dissemination of web, social media, and print content related to youth and teen services, working closely with the Communications Manager to ensure a coherent and positive message reaches the community regarding programming and collections.
- Collaborate with the Assistant Director to maintain welcoming, flexible, safe, and age-appropriate environments in youth and teen spaces.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manage reference services, providing readers’ advisory and computer assistance to patrons of all ages across a variety of collections and formats. Acknowledge the vital role of reference services in public librarianship and prioritize presence at the Information Desk as required.
- Maintain proficiency in Library databases and digital services, acquire knowledge of new technologies and software, and evaluate digital services for youth and teens for public accessibility.
- Assist in the development, interpretation, updating, and communication of library policies and procedures.
- Ensure enforcement of Library policies related to public use; respond to emergencies with prompt judgment and support; and produce detailed, clear, and concise incident reports.
- Lead the Summer Reading Committee, co-lead the Programming Committee, and participate in various internal and external committees as needed.
- Communicate effectively with patrons, colleagues, and professional contacts.
- Foster collaborative relationships across departments to achieve departmental and Library goals.
- Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the workplace and the community.
- Adapt to multiple priorities, interruptions, and demands, resolving issues in a constructive manner.

Job Qualifications and Skills:
- A Master of Library Science (MLS) from an ALA accredited institution is required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of youth and teen literature is essential.
- Proven experience in youth and teen programming is required.
- A minimum of two years of public library experience as a professional librarian, including working on a reference desk and participation in collection development is necessary.
- At least one year of supervisory experience is preferred.
- Proficiency in MS Office, Google Workspace, and various computer technologies is required.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills are essential.
- A strong commitment to public service and delivering exemplary customer service is necessary.
